At the Battle of Cape St. George on November 25, 1943, Arleigh Burke commanded Destroyer Squadron 23 in an engagement against Japanese destroyers conducting a troop evacuation from Buka Island. Guided by radar, Burke’s five destroyers intercepted the enemy force, sinking three Japanese ships without loss to his own. The action demonstrated effective U.S. destroyer tactics in night combat and marked an important success in the Solomon Islands campaign.
