Octavo, 86pp. Original black paper wraps, title in gilt on spine. Bound along spine with twine. Solid text block, thin creasing along edges of wrappers, internally fine.

One of 1,000 limited edition copies, this one numbered 198. Twice inscribed on the front flyleaf. First reads: “Inscribed to Gilbert L. — with the regards of Allen Crandall.” Second reads: “And the good wishes of Clarence Darrow / July 8th, 1935.”

Clarence Darrow (1857-1938) was an American lawyer and high-profile member of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). He entered the national stage during the Scopes “Monkey” trial and the Leopold and Loeb murder trial. Darrow grew up in Kinsman, Ohio.
