Octavo, [8], 272pp. Blue three quarter leather over burgundy cloth boards, title in gilt on spine, raised bands with decorative gilt compartments. Publisher’s “I” on copyright page indicating a first edition. Top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Silk bookmark bound-in. Clean text throughout. Pages 215/216 and 227/228 tipped-in. Top edge of spine rubbed, previous owner’s name embossed on front free endpaper and front flyleaf. Housed in near fine blue cloth slipcase. An attractive copy.

This book was originally to be titled The Man Who Bought the Plaza. Just as the book was going to press in 1949, Conrad Hilton acquired the Waldorf-Astoria. The publisher stopped production on the book and revisions were made, including the change of title to The Man Who Bought the Waldorf and the addition of a new chapter at the end. According to the author, some minor corrections were made to the original text, which may explain the tipped-in pages previously noted. The book was finally published in 1950.
