Comments: General George C. Marshall was one of the most influential military and political leaders of the 20th Century. He rose through the ranks to serve as Army Chief of Staff during World War II. President Truman would ask Marshall to serve as the 50th Secretary of State, where he advocated for the rapid rebuilding of Europe, known as the Marshall Plan. After resigning as Secretary of State, he served for one year as the Secretary of Defense. He retired in 1951, retiring to Leesburg, Virginia.
