All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers, decorative gilt turn-ins and board edges. Errata slip at the end of Volume I. Complete with frontispiece portraits in both volumes, a map of Charleston and Fort Sumter in Volume II. (Dornbusch II: 2605) (Nevins II: 86) A scarce example in the publisher’s full morocco binding, a fine example.

The author of this work, Colonel Alfred Roman, was the aide-de-camp and inspector general for Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard. This biography was largely written by Beauregard himself, with the rest complied by Roman using the general’s journals and battlefield notes. According to Eicher, “this is a valuable source on the first victor of the Confederacy.” (Eicher 186) The first edition of this work was released in 1883. This second printing was sold by subscription in 1884, in full cloth, half morocco, sheepskin or full morocco.
