Description

The first edition of The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco, in a beautiful first state dust jacket.

Octavo, [8], 502pp. Salmon hardcover boards, cream cloth, title in gilt on spine. Stated “First edition” on copyright page, with the “BCDE” letter line flush left. Solid text block, appears almost unread. In publisher’s first state dust jacket, $15.95 on the front flap, ISBN 0-15-144647-4 on the rear panel, touch of wear at head of the spine, a superb example.

The Name of the Rose was first published in Italian as Il nome della rosa by Bompiani in 1980. It was Eco’s debut novel after an established career as a scholar of semiotics and medieval culture. Jean-Jacques Annaud’s film adaptation, starring Sean Connery, followed in 1986.
