Description
An early edition of The Negro Sunday Scholar; or The Life of Catherine Chambers by T.K. Hyde, published in 1829.
Small pamphlet, measures 3.25″ x 5″, 20pp. Bound along left edge with string. Solid text block, corners and edges heavily worn, with faint soiling throughout. Text remains legible. A delicate, rare example, with only one copy of the first edition (1828) located at the Free Library of Philadelphia. Not found in Blockson.
The author, T.K. Hyde, was a Wesleyan Methodist Missionary. This work is part of a series released by the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC). Other titles from the series include The History of Jesus (1827) and Dialogue Between Three Sunday Scholars (1828).
The Methodist movement gained traction in the late 18th century due to its prioritization of anti-elitism and anti-slavery morals. Under the leadership of Richard Allen and Daniel Coker, some African American congregations within the MEC left due to continuous discrimination throughout the South. They established the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1816.
