Quarto, [ten volumes]. Publisher’s blue cloth, title in gilt on spine, stamped illustration on cover. An early issue of this work, with a revised index. Top edge gilt. Illustrated endpapers, with hinge starting in Volume I and X, but sound binding and limited to these two volumes. In publisher’s scarce dust jackets, all with some expected wear and occasional chipping, Volume I and Volume III with some loss along spine. In publisher’s original shipping crate, with tags from John Wanamaker of New York. Comments: Considered by Eicher to be “the grandfather of pictorial histories, this mammoth work is a necessary part of any Civil War library.” The first edition of this work was published in 1911, with this set being issued the following year, but with a revised index (third edition). Important contributors to this work include the photographer Mathew Brady, Frederick Dent Grant, George H. Putnam, William C. Church, Theodore Rodenbaugh and President William H. Taft.
