Presentation copy of the deluxe edition of The Principles and Practice of Medicine by William Osler. This copy was a gift from Walter J. Daly, Dean of the Indiana Department of Medicine, to August M. Watanabe, the department chair.
Thick octavo, xvi, 1079pp, 8pp, [2]. Bound in full blue morocco, decorative raised bands. Title stamped in gilt. All edges gilt, silk endpapers, silk bookmark. Privately printed for members of the Classics of Medicine Library. The text reproduces the first edition published by D. Appleton and Company in 1892.

Walter J. Daly (1930-2024) and August M. Watanabe (1941-2009) were longtime colleagues at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Daly chaired the Department of Medicine from 1970 until becoming dean in 1983. Watanabe joined the faculty in the early 1970s and became the university’s youngest professor of internal medicine at age 37. He succeeded Daly as department chair in 1983 and remained in that position until joining Eli Lilly in 1990. He later became Lilly’s executive vice president for science and technology.
