Samuel I. Rosenman (1896-1973) was one of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s closest advisers, beginning as counsel to Roosevelt when he was governor of New York and later becoming a key White House speechwriter and the first official White House Counsel. Rosenman helped shape Roosevelt’s public speeches and introduced the phrase “New Deal” into Roosevelt’s 1932 convention speech. In retirement, he wrote his memoirs, Working with Roosevelt, and finished editing the final volumes of The Public Papers of Franklin Roosevelt.
