Thick octavo, xii, 1245pp, [3]. Publisher’s green-gray cloth, title stamped in gilt over black printed label. Stated “First Printing” on copyright page. Top edge dyed red. Solid text block, internally clean, a fine example. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $10.00 on front flap, black border on rear panel with a photograph of the author by Arnold Newman. Notable chipping along edges, short closed tears, glassine beginning to separate on front cover, foxing to verso. Includes the belly band from Kroch & Brentano’s of Chicago, with “Autographed by the Author” noted.
This copy is signed by the author on the half title.
An exceptionally rare signed first printing of Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, and only the second known copy with the “Autographed” belly band.
The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich was first published by Simon & Schuster in 1960, and it was a commercial success in both the United States and Great Britain. It won the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 1961.
