First edition, first printing of The Roosevelt I Knew by Frances Perkins, inscribed by former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and the author, who was the first woman to serve in a presidential cabinet.

Octavo, viii, 408pp. Orange cloth, title stamped on spine and front cover. The first printing, with “Published By The Viking Press In November 1946” on copyright page. Heavily soiled cloth, dampstain to lower quarter and at the spine, limited impact to text block. Paired with the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $3.75 on front flap, bright illustrations, chipping along edges, a very good example. Inscribed on the front endpapers by Eleanor Roosevelt and the author, Frances Perkins. (Halter T-380) (Edens F324) An exceptionally scarce first edition, signed by two of the most influential women of the 20th century.

The author of this book, Frances Perkins (1880-1965), was the 4th United States Secretary of Labor and the first woman to hold a presidential cabinet position. She remained Secretary of Labor through the Roosevelt administration, serving from 1933-1945, the longest tenure of any person to hold this office.
