Octavo, [12], 303pp, [1]. Full black cloth, title in silver on spine. Yellow topstain. Stated “First Edition” on copyright page, no additional printings listed. Solid text block, faint offsetting to endpapers, near fine example. In the publisher’s dust jacket, $3.50 retail price on front flap, light shelf wear, with rubbing to corners.
Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: “For the Duchess of Buccleuch with a Merry Christmas and my love. Fred [1952].”
In his memoir Now and Then: A Memoir of Vocation (1983), Buechner recalls a stay with friends at the Drumlanrig Castle, during which he met the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch. With nearly thirty years between the publication of The Seasons’ Difference and his memoir, it is clear the pair made a lasting impression on Buechner.
