The first edition of The Secret Surrender, signed by CIA Director, Allen Dulles.

Octavo, viii, [2], 268pp. Three quarter green morocco, title in gilt on the spine, green cloth boards, decorative raised bands. Top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, silk bookmark. Stated “First Edition” on copyright page, with “H-Q” below. Solid text block. Light sunning to the spine, otherwise fine. Includes numerous photographic plates, some illustrations.

Signed on the half title by the author: “To Mardi + John, with the affectionate regards of the author. Allen W. Dulles. Washington, D.C. Oct. 1966.”

This book is inscribed to John Chambers Hughes, and his wife, Margaret Kelly Hughes, both close friends of Allen Dulles.

John Chambers Hughes (1891-1971), served as the U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO from 1953-1955. His wife, Margaret, lived in France during World War II and helped French prisoners of war held in Meaux. She was decorated three times by the French Government for her service to the country and wrote “Les Lauriers sont Coupés” about her experiences during the war.

Allen Dulles (1893-1969) was the Director of the CIA under President Eisenhower from 1953-1961. He served on the Warren Commission in 1963-1964. His brother, John Foster Dulles, served as Secretary of State under President Eisenhower.
