Thick octavo, [two volumes in one], xxxv, [blank], 392pp, vi, [2], 449pp. Dark blue cloth, title in gilt on spine and front cover, light wear at edges of spine. Frontispiece portrait opposite title page, 10 illustrated plates, one full page map, multiple charts and diagrams. Inscribed by Roald Amundsen on front free endpaper, with the following inscription: “Mr. Roy Carruthers, with kind regards. Roald Amundsen.” (Spence 21, Conrad PP156)
Comments: The South Pole, first published in 1913 in two volumes, recounts the expedition of Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who became the first explorer to reach the South Pole in 1911.
