Dragon Seed was first published by The John Day Company in 1942, a wartime novel set in and around Nanking during the Japanese invasion of China. The book was adapted by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer into the 1944 film Dragon Seed, starring Katharine Hepburn, Walter Huston, and Aline MacMahon.
