Pat Summitt (1952-2016) was the head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers women’s basketball team from 1974 to 2012. She achieved a record of 1,098-208, becoming the first NCAA basketball coach-men’s or women’s-to reach 1,000 career wins, and led Tennessee to eight national championships (1987, 1989, 1991, 1996-1998, 2007, 2008). She also served as head coach of the U.S. women’s national team, winning a gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2011, she continued coaching one final season before retiring, later establishing the Pat Summitt Foundation to support research and care for the disease.
