Robert Bork (1927-2012) was an American legal scholar, judge, and conservative political figure known for his strict constructionist views on constitutional law. He served as the Solicitor General (1973-1977) and Acting Attorney General of the United States, as well as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit (1982-1988). Bork’s nomination to the Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan in 1987 was highly controversial and ultimately rejected by the Senate, leading to the term “borking” to describe intense opposition to judicial nominees. As an author, Bork wrote influential books such as The Tempting of America: The Political Seduction of the Law, which critiques judicial activism, and Slouching Towards Gomorrah: Modern Liberalism and American Decline, which examines cultural and moral issues in America.
