Description

The first American gift book, the 1838 edition of The Token and Atlantic Souvenir: A Christmas and New Year’s Present, edited by Samuel G. Goodrich. The first appearance of five Nathaniel Hawthorne stories, including “Endicott and the Red Cross.”

Octavo, viii, [9]-312pp, [2]. Full dark brown morocco, title stamped in gilt on spine, gilt floral urn stamped on front cover, covers ruled and decorated in blind. Yellow coated endpapers, all edges gilt. Scattered foxing throughout, free of marginalia or inscriptions. Solid text block. Complete with ten illustrated plates, including the presentation plate, frontispiece, engraved title-page vignette, and seven full-page steel engravings. All plates with scattered foxing and toning, each with a tissue guard.
