Description

The first edition of The Troubled Partnership: A Re-appraisal of the Atlantic Alliance by Henry A. Kissinger, inscribed to his lifelong friend, biographer, and Harvard classmate, Stephen R. Graubard.

Octavo, xiv,[2], 266pp, [6]. Green cloth, title stamped on the spine. Stated “First Edition / 34895” on the copyright page. Light rubbing to the spine. Notations in pencil, primarily in the first half of the text. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $5.95 on the front flap, short closed tear at heel of the spine, a near fine example.

Inscribed on the half-title: “To Stephen Graubard / with friendship / Henry A. Kissinger / April 12, 1965.” A scarce title, signed by Henry A. Kissinger.

Stephen R. Graubard (1924-2021) met Henry Kissinger as a fellow Harvard graduate student in 1951. He was the longtime editor of Daedalus, the journal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, from 1961 to 1999, while continuing to teach at Brown and Harvard. Graubard wrote a biography of Kissinger’s early days, titled “Kissinger: Portrait of a Mind” (1973), focusing on his early writings while at Harvard.
