Description

First English edition of The U.S. Military Doctrine by Genrikh Trofimenko, inscribed to National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft.

Octavo, 222pp. Dark blue hardcover, title in silver. First edition in English, with first edition appearing in Russian. In publisher’s fine dust jacket. Inscribed opposite the title page: “To Brent – with great respect and a hope that we will be able to cut (or untie?) Gordian knots in arms control for the benefit of our two nations and humanity. Henry Trofimenko. Washington, D.C. Dec. 3, 1986.” A unique inscription considering the recent collapse of the Reykjavik Summit the previous month between President Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev.

Brent Scowcroft served as the National Security Advisor for President Gerald R. Ford and President George H.W. Bush. After leaving the Bush administration, he wrote A World Transformed with President George H.W. Bush, which was an insiders’ account of the White House after the fall of the Soviet Union. In 2001, President George W. Bush appointed Scowcroft the Chair of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board, where he found himself at odds with Vice President Cheney on the Iraq Invasion. In 2008, he published America and the World: Conversations on the Future of American Foreign Policy, along with Zbigniew Brzezinski.
