Octavo, [six volumes]. Full green leather, title stamped in gilt on spines with raised bands and decorative gilt compartments, gilt borders and embellishments on covers. All edges gilt. Yellow endpapers with decorative gilt turn-ins and board edges. Wear to joints, corners rubbed, light shelf wear to bottom edge of boards. Volume I has a bit more wear than other volumes, spine rubbed with small loss of leather at spine ends. Front endpapers partially cracked at hinges, but all bindings are sound. Soiled endpapers, intermittent toning to pages, occasional finger marks, Volume 5 has a small closed tear along fore edge of pages 167/168. Offsetting to a few pages due to illustrative plates (5 total) and silk bookmarks. Bookplate of Chicago attorney Charles S. Thornton (1851-1932) on front pastedown endpaper of each volume. Gift inscription to Thornton’s father, Solon Thornton (1821-1902), on front free endpaper of Volume I, with his name written on title page. Daniel Webster’s signature on subscriber’s page in Volume I. A nice set of the works of this noted orator and statesman.
