Octavo, vi, 200pp. Red cloth, title in gilt on spine. Top edge gilt. “Published April 1907” on copyright page. Light rubbing to tips, a near fine example. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “Rev. Charles Noyes / With regards of C.F. Adams / Boston 7 Aug, 1907.”

Charles Francis Adams, Jr. (1835-1915) was the great-grandson of President John Adams and the grandson of President John Quincy Adams. He fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War, serving with distinction at Gettysburg. By the end of the war, he was promoted to the rank of colonel, and in 1866, he was awarded the rank of brevet brigadier general. Adams would later serve as the President of the Union Pacific Railroad from 1884-1890, after which he would become a prominent American historian.
