Tragedy and Hope is Quigley’s extensive history of Western civilization. It examines the political, economic, and military transformations of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The work is controversial for its discussion of the secret society of Cecil Rhodes, Alfred Milner, the Round Table groups, and international financial networks, which Quigley shows had considerable influence over United States and British foreign policy.
Quigley taught at Georgetown University, where Bill Clinton studied under him. Clinton later publicly credited Quigley’s ideas as an important influence on his thinking.
