Signed first edition of Trans-Atlantic Historical Solidarity by Charles Francis Adams, Jr., of the Adams political family.

Octavo, 184pp. Toning to endpapers, faint foxing to leaf ends. Light soiling to cloth, solid text block. Top edge gilt. In the publisher’s paper dust jacket, title on spine and front cover, chipping along top edge. Signed on the front free endpaper to prominent Virginia author, poet, and historian, William Gordon McCabe. Inscription reads: “Col. Wm. Gordon McCabe / With very kind regard of Charles F. Adams. / Washington 21 April, 1914.”

Charles Francis Adams, Jr. (1835-1915) was the great-grandson of President John Adams and the grandson of President John Quincy Adams. He fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War, serving with distinction at Gettysburg. By the end of the war, he was promoted to the rank of colonel, and in 1866, he was awarded the rank of brevet brigadier general. Adams would later serve as the President of the Union Pacific Railroad from 1884-1890, after which he would become a prominent American historian.
