Centenary edition published in 1965 stated on copyright page and stamped in gilt on spines. All volumes in near fine condition, with faint dust remnants on top edges and rubbing to corners. Features bright gilt, illustrations, and fold-out maps. Held in acetate dust wrappers, with small tears and chipping.
Dr. Heinrich Barth (1821-1865) was one of the first explorers to collect and comprehend the use of oral history for historical research. He learned to speak and write in Arabic, as well as multiple African languages, to document the various cultures of the continent in great detail. Travels and Discoveries in North and Central Africa is one of the most important early sources on Africa, being cited by other notable scholars like Charles Darwin.
