This is Catton’s memoir of his childhood in Benzonia, Michigan, recounting the fading lumber era, overnight railway travel, and the Civil War veterans whose stories shaped his later work as a historian.

Catton was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award for A Stillness at Appomattox.
