Comments: Ariel Sharon served as the 11th Prime Minister of Israel, from 2001-2006. Before entering politics, he was a commander in the Israeli Army, serving during in the Suez Crisis, the Six-Day War and the Yom-Kippur War. As Israeli Minister of Defense, he directed the 1982 war with Lebanon, where he earned the nickname the “Butcher of Beirut” amongst Arabs. He encouraged the development of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Gaza, later orchestrating the Israeli disengagement from the Gaza Strip. He suffered a stroke in 2006 and passed away in 2014. Yitzhak Rabin called Sharon one of the “greatest field commanders in our history.”
