William O. Douglas (1898-1980) served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1939 to 1975, the longest tenure in the Court’s history. Appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Douglas became one of the twentieth century’s most influential and controversial jurists, noted for his strong defense of civil liberties, free speech, privacy rights, and environmental conservation.
