Major General George H. Olmsted (1901-1998) graduated from West Point in 1922 and served in the army until the following year. He was recalled to active service in 1942, taking charge of the Lend-Lease program for the United States Army. In 1944, he was assigned to the staff of General Albert Wedemeyer in China, and as the war ended, he was charged with organizing the liberation of all allied prisoners being held in Japanese POW Camps. This group of POWs included General Jonathan Wainwright. For his service during the war, Olmsted was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. Leaving the service in 1946, he returned to a successful career in the insurance industry. Recalled again to duty during the Korean War, Olmsted was promoted to major general in 1951. He was released from active service in 1953. Olmsted died in 1998 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
