Comments: Doctor Thomas W. Burton was born a slave in Kentucky and one of 15 children. He attended Berea College and later the Medical College of Indiana, earning his degree in 1892. He moved to Springfield, Ohio where he established a medical practice and in 1897 founded the first Negro Medical Society in Ohio.
