Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “To President Woodrow Wilson / from his friend / Henry van Dyke / Oct. 1, 1919 / You are our chosen leader. Go on, and God be your guide.”
A longtime friend of President Woodrow Wilson, Van Dyke was appointed the U.S. Minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg in 1913, serving during the opening years of World War I.
Prior to the presidency, Van Dyke and Wilson were fellow professors at Princeton University.
