Description

The first English edition of Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, with a drawing and inscription by Sendak.

Oblong quarto, [38pp]. Illustrated boards. The first English edition, with “First published in Great Britain 1967” on the title page. No additional printings noted. Pictorial endpapers, bright boards and clean illustrated text. Lightly bumped lower right corner, else fine. In the publisher’s first impression dust jacket, “18s net” retail price and “P3496” code on the front flap, two closed tears along margins of front panel, even toning to white matte borders, a very good example. This is the first impression dust jacket, with no mention of subsequent printings on the front flap.

Signed by author and illustrator Maurice Sendak on half-title, with an illustration of a “Wild Thing” drawn in his hand.

(Grolier Children’s 100, 97)

An exceptional signed copy.

Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are was first published by Harper & Row in 1963 and won the 1964 Caldecott Medal. (Hanrahan A58)
