Charles W. Sawyer (1887-1979) served as the United States Secretary of Commerce from 1948 to 1953 under President Harry S. Truman. Before his tenure as Secretary of Commerce, Sawyer had a distinguished career in law and business, and he was also actively involved in Democratic politics. He served as the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium from 1944 to 1945, during a critical period of World War II. As Secretary of Commerce, Sawyer was instrumental in promoting American trade and industry during the post-war economic boom. He was known for his efforts to balance the interests of labor and management, and for supporting the Marshall Plan, which was crucial in rebuilding European economies after the war. Sawyer died in 1979 and is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery.
