Kermit Roosevelt (1889-1943) was an American explorer, soldier, and intelligence officer. He was the son of President Theodore Roosevelt and accompanied him to South America to explore the Amazon River basin in 1913. What became known as the River of Doubt South American Expedition served as the basis for Roosevelt’s popular book, Through the Brazilian Wilderness. Kermit married Belle Willard in 1914 and they had four children together. Roosevelt served in the United States Army in both World Wars. During World War II, he served with distinction as a Second Lieutenant in the British Army, but was discharged after an injury. He later joined the U.S. Army, with the assistance of his cousin, President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Kermit died by suicide in Alaska in 1943.
