In a letter to Vic Gold published in this book, dated May 18, 1998, President Bush responds to admonishment from Gold that criticizing the media was “beneath [him]” as an ex-president. Bush responds by saying: “Vic…it’s really hard. I miss the crowd reaction, frankly. I miss hearing Mr. and Mrs. Average American cheer as I attacked. No more wimp, no more nice guy – I was out there in the raw meat department stirring the passions of the crowd and old Average Joe is nodding and clapping.” Vic Gold (1928-2017) served as a senior advisor to President George H.W. Bush. Gold co-authored “Looking Forward,” Bush’s 1987 campaign autobiography, and played a key role in shaping Bush’s public image during his political career. In addition to his work with Bush, Gold served as deputy press secretary for Sen. Barry Goldwater and press secretary for Vice President Spiro Agnew.
