Large octavo, unpaginated. Illustrated glossy paper over boards, title printed in white on front cover. No additional printings listed. Solid text block, bumped corners, notable wear to spine. Previous ownership inscription on the title page. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, with “200/200” retail price code on front flap. Ownership note on front flap. The jacket is in very good condition, with chipping along edges. Two closed tears to front panel. This first state jacket features the 200/200 code and the correct seven titles listed on the rear panel. (Younger & Hirsch 112)
If I Ran the Zoo was removed from publication by Dr. Seuss Enterprises on March 2, 2021 in response to criticism of racist imagery throughout the book. Six books were removed in total, including If I Ran the Zoo, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, McElligot’s Pool, Scrambled Eggs Super!, On Beyond Zebra!, and The Cat’s Quizzer.
