An exceptional copy.

From Eicher: “…it offers a look inside the mind of one of the South’s important field commanders and stands as a respectable source on Early’s Shenandoah Valley campaign of 1864.” Jubal Anderson Early (1816-1894) was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1837. He served in the Second Seminole War and the Mexican-American War before practicing law and entering politics. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Early joined the Confederate army, rising to major general and commanding troops in key battles including First Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. In 1864, he led a campaign in the Shenandoah Valley and advanced to the outskirts of Washington, D.C., before being repelled at the Battle of Fort Stevens. Known for his aggressive tactics and staunch support of the Confederate cause, Early fled to Mexico and Canada after the war before returning to Virginia in 1869, where he became a leading proponent of the “Lost Cause” narrative and wrote memoirs defending the Confederate leadership.
