Inscribed by former President William H. Taft: “Sincerely yours / William H. Taft / Dec. 30th 1916 / New Haven.” Provenance: This book was sold as part of the Frederick Skiff Collection on September 18th, 1947 by Butterfield & Butterfield Auctions (now Bonhams). This was “Lot 2557,” as part of 6 other items by former President Taft.
Comments: Published during the election of 1908, this book was a collection of speeches delivered during his time in the Philippines and Secretary of War for Theodore Roosevelt. The book was inscribed in 1916, after he had left office, but before he began his second career as a Supreme Count Justice. The former owner of this book, Frederick Skiff, was an author and noted book collector of Americana material. He was the founder of the Acorn Club.
