Comments: The first paper published by Frederick Douglass was The North Star, which ran from 1847-1851. When it ran into financial difficulties, Douglass merged his paper with Gerrit Smith’s Liberty Party Paper and began Frederick Douglass’ Paper. The first edition was printed on June 6th, 1851 and ran until 1858. The paper was dedicated to abolition causes and improving the living conditions of “colored people in the north.” It went beyond abolition to cover the temperance movement, women’s rights, national politics and literary reviews.
