General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) and General Charles Pomeroy Stone (1824-1887) served together in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. With General Stone’s military career sidelined by a Union defeat at the Battle of Ball’s Bluff, he remained close to General Sherman, who would recommend him as a General in the Egyptian Army (1870-1883) and Chief Engineer of the Statue of Liberty Project (1883). General Sherman would later serve as a pallbearer at Stone’s funeral in 1887.
