Description

The first edition of A Scientific and Practical Treatise on American Football For Schools and Colleges by Amos Alonzo Stagg and Henry L. Williams, published in 1893, part of the “American Football Trilogy.”

Twelvemo, [2], 274pp, [2]. Publisher’s blue cloth, title stamped in gilt on spine, illustration of player on front cover in gilt. This work was the first of the early football rules books to feature diagrams of the game, and is complete with an illustration of the football field and 69 plates diagramming plays. Period ownership inscription on the second front free endpaper, dated 1893. The lineup of the Princeton University football team opposite the inscription. Rubbing to cloth spine, some loss to gilt, soiling to covers. Internally stable, but occasional leaves are in delicate condition. (Grobani, 1-6)

A very good example of this scarce work.

This work is part of the “American Football Trilogy,” the founding documents of the American football game. The other two works include American Football by Walter Camp and Football by Walter Camp and Lorin F. Deland. This first edition of “Scientific and Practical Treatise on American Football” was followed by a second printing from D. Appleton & Company in 1894 and reissued by Finch Press in 1972.
