Description

The illustrated single volume edition of A Thousand Miles Up The Nile by Amelia B. Edwards.

Octavo, xxvii, [1], 499pp. Green cloth, title in gilt, decorative inlaid illustrations. Yellow endpapers, bookplate on front pastedown. Includes upwards of 70 woodcut engravings by G. Pearson, after drawings made by the author while traveling. A bright, near fine example.

The first edition of A Thousand Miles Up the Nile appeared in 1877, as a two volume edition. This Second Edition was revised by the author and condensed to a single volume. Amelia B. Edwards (1831-1892) was an English writer, traveler, and pioneering Egyptologist best known for her explorations along the Nile River. In 1873-74, she journeyed up the Nile from Cairo to Abu Simbel, documenting her travels in the influential book A Thousand Miles up the Nile (1877). Her vivid descriptions and sketches brought ancient Egypt to the attention of a wider audience and highlighted the urgent need for archaeological preservation. The trip deeply influenced her commitment to protecting Egyptian antiquities, ultimately leading her to co-found the Egypt Exploration Fund (now Society) in 1882.
