The limited edition, two-volume edition of Abraham Lincoln 1809-1858 by Albert J. Beveridge.

Quarto, [two volumes], xxviii, 607pp; vii, [3], xx. Quarter brown leather, gray paper boards. Most leaves unopened, internally clean. Bookplate on front endpaper of each volume. Complete with frontispiece in both volumes and 16 full page illustrations. Light wear to leather spine, some rubbing to title on spine. Frontispiece portrait in each volume, with tissue cover. Stated on copyright page: “The First Impression of This Two-Volume Edition Is Limited To Five Hundred Copies Uncut.”

Albert J. Beveridge started his career as a United States Senator from Indiana. After losing his senate seat, he became a historian, writing The Life of John Marshall. This detailed account of the life of the first Chief Justice won Beveridge a Pulitzer Prize for Biography. His final years were spent writing this book, which worked to demystify the early life of President Abraham Lincoln. After Beveridges’ untimely death, the manuscript was handed over to Carl Sandburg for completion.
