Octavo, xxiii, [1], 583pp. Original green ribbed cloth, title in gilt on spine and cover. Includes “Scribner’s Seal” on copyright page. Frontispiece portrait of Roosevelt. Light wear to cloth, scuff mark to spine, faint rubbing to front cover. Small tide mark to lower edge of text block. Complete with map of the Roosevelt’s route through Africa and numerous other illustrated plates. (Cole & Vail, A29e) Includes Beckett Letter of Authenticity. Archival tissue reinforcement at front hinge. Notable toning and thumb marks to front free endpaper, surrounding the signature. Inscription reads: “To John Otis Ewing, at the suggestion of K. McCaughtry / with Xmas greetings from Theodore Roosevelt, Dec. 25th, 1910.”
This third edition, published the same year as the first edition, is distinguishable by the green ribbed cloth and gilt lettering. The first edition, first issue, was not released in green cloth. The second printing of the third edition has the lettering in all black.
