George McGovern (1922-2012) was the Democratic candidate in the 1972 presidential election, losing to incumbent President Richard Nixon and paving the way for the candidacy of Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter. McGovern’s loss marked a shift in the democratic party, away from urban liberalism, towards a more conservative populism, with strong rural and southern appeal. McGovern also served as Senator from South Dakota from 1963-1981.
