Description

Signed first edition of Archer at Large by Ross Macdonald, inscribed to his lawyer, Harris Seed. This omnibus edition of Lew Archer stories includes The Galton Case, The Chill, and Black Money.

Octavo, xi, 626pp. Yellow cloth, title in silver on spine. Yellow topstain, faintly foxed. Stated “First Edition” on copyright page. Solid text block, light rubbing to extremities, a near fine copy. In the publisher’s dust jacket, $7.95 retail price on front flap, faint sunning to spine, near fine. (Penzler 262-263)

Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “June 30, 1970. For Harris, old reader and good friend, in case he ever runs out of reading matter. Ken.”

A nice association copy between Ross Macdonald and his longtime lawyer and friend.

Kenneth Millar, signed “Ken” in this copy, used numerous pseudonyms over his career, including John Macdonald, John Ross Macdonald, and Ross Macdonald. These pen names, made up of popular Millar family names, were used to help avoid confusion between Kenneth and his wife, Margaret, who was also a mystery fiction author.
