Octavo, [two volumes], (2), 464pp; (2), 467pp. Contemporary three quarter brown morocco, raised bands, title in gilt over red morocco label, marbled boards. Marbled endpapers and leaf ends. Light foxing, limited to frontispiece portraits in each volume. Frontispiece portrait with tissue cover in each volume. Complete with 20 full page plates, four maps (two-foldout) and hundreds of etchings throughout. Map refers to the Arctic sea as “Open Sea,” not “Kane’s Sea.” (Arctic Bibliography, 8373) (Sabin 37001) An excellent example of this early work on polar exploration.
