Octavo, 95pp, [5]. Patterned paper hardcover, title in blue on paper labels affixed to front cover and spine. Blue topstain. Solid text block, sunning to spine, otherwise fine. Text is printed in German. This limited edition printing is hand-set in Bodoni-Antiqua type on Zerkall laid paper. The patterned boards are from prints by Emil Kretz, Basel.
One of 660 copies, this one numbered 150. Signed on the half-title: “H. Heinrich Lustig / [sincerely] Albert Schweitzer. [While gathering in] Grumbach / 13 Sept. 1952.”
The first edition of Albert Schweitzer’s childhood memoirs was published by C.H. Beck’schen in 1949.Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) had a multifaceted career as a theologian, philosopher, musician, and humanitarian. He gained renown for his groundbreaking work as a medical missionary in Africa, founding a hospital in Gabon to serve the local population. Schweitzer’s philosophy of “reverence for life” and his commitment to alleviating human suffering earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952.
