Description

Plate number 6, Buffalo Hunt, Chase, from the first American edition of George Catlin’s North American Indian Portfolio, Hunting Scenes and Amusements of the Rocky Mountains and Prairies of America, published by James Ackerman in 1845.

Hand-colored lithograph, framed with cream colored matte. Full piece measures 25.5″ x 21.25″, not examined outside of frame. A few blemishes to the matte, minor spotting to the plate, a bright, near fine example. One of twenty-five plates from Catlin’s North American Indian Portfolio. (Howes C243) (Sabin 11532) (Bennett 22) An exceptional piece.

The first American edition of George Catlin’s North American Indian Portfolio was pirated by James Ackerman of New York, without the knowledge of Catlin or his publisher. Many consider the Ackerman edition to be superior to the London edition due to the quality and coloring of the plates. Plate No. 6, sold here, is one of the most popular images from the Catlin collection.
